Giving the Dragon Fire

Today’s review will be about a book called Giving the Dragon Fire by Victoria Jayne. It is the first book of the series, which will be released on April 16, 2024, the rest are not out yet,
but can be read as a standalone. It is an adult paranormal romance, shapeshifter-fantasy series in a

modern world setting.

A little bit about the book;

Ella Kincaid just finished her final exams and has one last weekend to have fun before entering the grueling world of a corporation to begin her dream job. Unexpectedly, she could have never imagined her one-night stand with Gideon could put her in an ethical dilemma on day one.

Gideon Hayes, a dragon shifter who wants his fire and to just make jewelry ends up making one incredibly stupid mistake, which will cost him his flame. All because he has a human mate.

In their minds, they’re mates who shouldn’t be together. If Ella can’t stop thinking about Gideon, she’ll lose her career. He’ll do anything to get his fire, including elisting a witch for help.

Can they ignore what destiny has in store for them? Because challenging fate may have a worse consequence than they ever imagined.

Review with some spoilers:

Oh gosh, where to start.. The writing style is great, there are 2 P.O.V’s that can be easily

read and won't be confusing. Ella, one of the main character’s, has a strong-witty personality

who takes no BS from anyone. She values her work and works hard to get to where she wants

to be.

Gideon, the other main character, is a dragon shifter who is sort of portrayed as a “bad boy”

without overdoing it. He does throw off the vibe of an f-boy, especially when he starts talking

about having relations with other women a lot, but I could be wrong. He has a strong work ethic

for making jewelry for his family's business, which is his passion.

In Gideon’s P.O.V he explains in great detail about how dragon shifters operate as far as how they

can shift, meeting other dragons (especially female dragons.. oh boy..), and the government council

for all shifters. I love that it’s informative about that type of stuff because some authors choose to

either use the information that is out today or make it up as they go and the feeling I got was a bit

of both.

I do have to point out that Felicity, Ella’s friend/roommate, is a firecracker and made me laugh out loud

a lot! Kind of a nutty girl but we all need a friend who's a bit weird.

When Gideon and Ella first met, there was obvious chemistry between them. Sometimes I like a

slow romance but I feel like this fits the book better as I continue to read it. Later on in the book,

the chemistry is still there but once the word “Mate” comes up for them, they try to break things

off from each other due to both of them wanting different things. I do think that that definitely

added more tension to the book as there wasn’t much there at first so I really appreciate that there

was some conflict of interest and tension between them later on. In my opinion, romance books

need that sort of conflict in order to grab the reader's attention to draw them in more and that’s

definitely what this author did!

One thing I do want to add is I noticed that in Ella’s P.O.V, she hardly talked about her family

or her family’s business. There were some snippets here and there, like what she would be doing

as far as working for her family’s business, I know it’s a firm for finance but I feel like I would

have loved to know more about the business and how they operate, maybe who else are clients.

There is one scene that her parents are in but it's very short. I only mention that because in Gideon’s

P.O.V, he goes to talk about his family’s business in depth about what they do, what he does for

the company and how they operate. There's also a lot of scenes where his family is involved as far as talking, getting together, etc..

Since it is an adult romance genre, there are spicy scenes, I believe about 3-5 scenes. It gets pretty

heavy and explicit so if anyone isn’t comfortable with that type of stuff and mainly reading for the conflict and

romance, you can always skip it. I did skip over a few scenes as it was a bit too graphic for me.

Overall, the writing style is great, the character building is well put, Ella and Gideon do get a bit whiny for a while but mellows out, chemistry is definitely there and spicy scenes to go along with it, shape-shifters (not just dragons but others as well), are present along with witches and vampires. If you're looking for that type of book, I definitely recommend this one!

I would love to see who will be the main characters in the second book, possibly Felicity, Ella’s friend? Or perhaps Gideon’s friend Declan?

Out of 5 stars I would give this book a 4, it was a good read and I thoroughly enjoyed it and

couldn't stop reading after diving in but the spicy scenes were a bit graphic in some areas and

I didn't particularly enjoy the characters being whiny but I know that there needs to be character

building.

Also, a big shout out and thank you to Victoria for contacting me to review her book, I hope to work

with you again in the future!
