The Toll

This review will be about The Toll by Neal Shusterman. It is the third of the series Arc of a Scythe and was published on November 5, 2019. There is a 3.5 book called “Gleanings”, reading the reviews it has compiled stories of some of the characters.  This series is a Young Adult Dystopian, Fantasy genre based off of Goodreads.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

A little about the book:

It’s been three years since Rowan and Citra disappeared since the sinking of the Scythe Island; Since Scythe Goddard is back and came into power, more determined than ever to expand his rein; Since the Thunderhead made everybody unsavories and closed itself off to everyone but Grayson Tolliver, causing him to have a following.

In this pulse-pounding conclusion to New York Times bestselling author Neal Shusterman’s Arc of a Scythe trilogy, constitutions are tested, old friends are brought back from the dead, and new friends are made.

Review:

Oh gosh where to start.. It took me a while to finish this one as I was trying to savor every last moment since I knew it was the last book. I’ve enjoyed this series so much that it’s going to stick with me forever.

The transition is still smooth and flawless from the second book to this one, same momentum as well which I love. When I started this series I was a little nervous on how Neal was going to end this series because it was either going to end up in a lot of deaths of citizens or the end of the scythes. I was not ready for that ending, it completely blew me away, I won’t spoil it!

It still has all of the great qualities of the first two books; interesting plot, amazing and diverse characters, and has the perfect pace to it. One thing I didn’t really care for was the multiple P.O.V’s. Mainly because I was starting to get confused and had a hard time keeping up. I do have to admit though, there were a couple of them that I didn’t mind.

Characters:

We still have the same point of view from the last book; Greyson Tolliver, the only one who can hear the Thunderhead and becomes The Toll. Scythe Faraday, on a mission to find the emergency back up plan that Scythe ancestors had left. Scythe Goddard, wreaking havoc with his new self and trying to create a “better world”.

*SPOILER AHEAD FOR 2 CHARACTERS

Citra, doing everything she can to stop Scythe Goddard by telling everyone the truth. I was so happy that she was alive, I had a feeling that that’s where it was going but it was still powerful.

Rowan, this character has had it rough this whole series, more so than any other. He’s alive as well, only to become a prisoner, again and again. There’s always a twist in life though.

****

There’s way to many new point of views to go over each character, but I figured I would name them; Captain Jerico Soberanis, Munira Atrushi, Loriana Barchok, Ezra Van Otterloo, Scythe Possuelo, Scythe Ayn Rand, Scythe Morrison, Curate Mendoza. Now, some of these characters only have 1 or 2 very small chapters but the others do have a few more chapters but on the smaller side.

Knowing it was the last book of the series; I was so happy that the characters were able to find resolution. This series has made me a fan of Neal and the Dystopian Genre forever. And if you're thinking of starting this series, I encourage you too! This series is overall satisfying, keeps you hooked and such a good read.

Short review for this one, all I can say is I highly enjoyed this series and I look forward to reading Neal’s other works!
