About the Book:

One pet crow fights to save humanity from an apocalypse in this uniquely hilarious debut from a genre-bending literary author.

S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (those idiots), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos ®.

Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to feel like something isn't quite right. His most tried-and-true remedies--from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis--fail to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he discovers that the neighbors are devouring each other and the local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle. Humanity's extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow whose knowledge of the world around him comes from his TV-watching education.

Hollow Kingdom is a humorous, big-hearted, and boundlessly beautiful romp through the apocalypse and the world that comes after, where even a cowardly crow can become a hero.

Review:

I would like to point out before starting this review, I am not a zombie person. I don’t enjoy reading about them or watching them, it’s just not my thing. But, imagine my surprise when I found this beauty and got to read in the P.O.V. of a crow during the zombie apocalypse. The way this author describes the zombies in S.T’s point of view made it so easy for me to read and enjoy reading it! Not to mention that the zombies in this book are completely different from the zombies we watch on TV or read about. The mixture of that and reading in S.T’s P.O.V. really made me fall in love with this book.

The writing style is beautifully written and it was super easy to follow along with the story. Multiple times throughout this book, I felt inspired, sad, and happy. I laughed out loud WAY too many times, and throughout the book there are many thought provoking things that made me somber and question things.

The main point of view is S.T., but occasionally there were different ones like; a cat, a dog, a whale’s, I’m pretty sure there was one of a tree as well. During those times the transition was smooth and I didn’t have a hard time keeping up.

I highly recommend this book if you like found family, heroism, and comedy from a crow named Shit Turd. Since this is a Horror, there are some gruesome parts throughout the book so if you're sensitive to that I don’t recommend it, but if you do decide to try it out, don’t worry, S.T. will pick you back up with either his humor or his singing. I’ll definitely be reading the second book once I get it!
